The microstructure of “as fired” (natural) surfaces is relatively rough. The yarn, when passing over the ceramic, touches the tips of this surface. The result is a relatively low yarn friendliness, but also a low friction.

On a polished yarn guide, the yarn touches a smooth, but large area, leading to high yarn friendliness, but also a high friction.
